“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased." — C.S. Lewis
One of the primary benefits of the season of Lent is self-reflection. Lent began in the early Church as a period of preparation for candidates for baptism. They were encouraged to reflect on their lives and examine their motives and be sure they were truly repentant and desiring to live a new life prior to being washed in the waters of baptism. This season of spiritual self-reflection was so beneficial that church leaders decided to extend the invitation to everyone.
This week, take some time to ponder what you believe God dreams for you. What would your life look like if you dedicated yourself fully to following his gracious leadership? What would the rhythms of your family life be if you were conformed by the Spirit into the image of Christ? How might you be settling for something far less satisfying than the abundant life Jesus came to offer?
It's never too late to change your mind about your direction and become a fully devoted follower of Jesus. God offers the absolute best possible life. Don't miss it by being "far too easily pleased."
