“We cannot change our past. We can not change the fact that people act in a certain way. We can not change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude.”– Chuck Swindoll
The Serenity Prayer, written by Reinhold Neibuhr, is instructive when it comes to our attitudes:
God, give me grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the Wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other.
Living one day at a time,
Enjoying one moment at a time,
Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
Taking, as Jesus did,
This sinful world as it is,
Not as I would have it,
Trusting that You will make all things right,
If I surrender to Your will,
So that I may be reasonably happy in this life,
And supremely happy with You forever in the next.
Amen.
There are many things that cannot be changed. But one thing over which I have absolute control is my attitude. My attitude determines so much about how I experience life. How’s your attitude? How is it making life better for you? Or, how is it making life worse? Is it enabling you to be the person God is calling you to be or is it detrimental to that cause?
You will want to be in worship at Christ Church the next several weeks as we tackle the attitude issue. This week the title of the message is “Altaring My Attitude.” See you then!
