A man is driving his family from the church to the restaurant following a Sunday worship service and he comments on the experience at church, saying, “I didn’t really like the music, today. I didn’t know any of the songs.”
His wife replied, “Really, I thought they were alright.”
“Well, the pastor’s sermon wasn’t as interesting as I’ve heard in the past,” said the man.
“Oh, I don’t know, I think it was just fine,” retorted his wife.
“And, what about that skit? I think the woman playing the mother forgot one of her lines,” the dad continued to complain.
“Heck, Dad!” cried out the boy from the back seat of the car, “I think it was a pretty good show for the five bucks you put in the offering!”
Worship is not a show. Or, if it is, it is a show for God, to show him how much we love him. The offering is not payment for services rendered; instead, the offering serves as an important act of worship as we put God first in our finances. Today, we talked about the element of worship we call the Offering. The Offering allows us to make a tangible sacrifice to God in thanksgiving for the ultimate sacrifice God made for us in the life, death, and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ.
I sense that God is doing something special in our midst as we re-focus on re-centering our lives on him in worship. I’m excited about next Sunday as we share the message, “Worship Elements: Blessing.” God does something amazing in us as we give ourselves to him in worship!
